How yoga can help runners and cyclists

Running, cycling and sports that get us moving are a great way to keep fit. But the repetitive motion of these activities means a shortening of certain muscle groups, making them less stable, tighter and can impact on training.

Yoga is the perfect recovery activity for runners and cyclists as it offers a holistic approach. Through integrating body, mind and breath, athletes can aid recovery of overworked muscles whilst fusing mindfulness and breathing techniques to better performance. It’s also a great way to learn about our individual bodies, through experimentation and enquiry.

In an ideal world, we can run and cycle freely without injury, but that’s rarely the case. Most runners and cyclists have experienced that niggle of pain at some point, and rest is usually the best bet to give the body a chance to recover. But in the long term, yoga can help manage this in an intelligent way, so you can enjoy exercise more freely and hopefully, without too many problems.
